# Bankzia > Compare U.S. banks and credit unions on financial strength and complaint history. Free Trust Grade for every FDIC- and NCUA-insured institution, built from federal data and updated regularly. Bankzia is a free, independent index of every FDIC-insured bank and NCUA-insured credit union in the United States. It combines federal financial call-report data with the CFPB Consumer Complaint Database to compute a single A–F **Trust Grade** per institution. Government databases let you look up an institution; Bankzia helps you compare and decide. ## Dataset at a glance - **Institutions graded:** 8,594 (4,269 banks · 4,325 credit unions) - **Combined assets covered:** $28.7T - **Cities indexed:** 4,660 - **Institutions with CFPB complaint data:** 164 - **Last updated:** 2026-06-25 ## URL patterns ### Institution pages - Bank profile: `/bank/{state-slug}/{city-slug}/{institution-slug}` - Credit union profile: `/credit-union/{state-slug}/{city-slug}/{institution-slug}` Each page includes: proprietary A–F Trust Grade, financial-strength score, customer-experience score, capital ratio, ROA, peer-benchmark percentiles, branch list, CFPB complaint profile (volume, rate per $1B assets, timeliness, relief rate), and a data-derived FAQ. ### Browse pages - All banks by state: `/banks/{state-slug}` - All credit unions by state: `/credit-unions/{state-slug}` - Banks in a city: `/banks/{state-slug}/{city-slug}` - Credit unions in a city: `/credit-unions/{state-slug}/{city-slug}` - Complaints by product category: `/products/{product-slug}` ### Rankings - `/rankings/best-banks` — highest Trust Grade scores, large banks - `/rankings/best-credit-unions` — highest Trust Grade scores, credit unions - `/rankings/most-complaints` — most CFPB complaints (raw volume) - `/rankings/highest-complaint-rate` — most complaints per $1B in assets - `/rankings/largest-banks` — ranked by total assets - `/rankings/largest-credit-unions` — ranked by total assets ### Reference pages - `/methodology` — full Trust Grade formula with weights and thresholds - `/statistics` — aggregate stats across all institutions - `/about`, `/faq`, `/contact`, `/disclaimer` ## Trust Grade methodology summary Two-pillar composite score (A = 90–100, B = 75–89, C = 60–74, D = 45–59, F < 45): **Financial strength (60% weight when no complaint data; 60% when complaints present)** - Capital ratio: 60% of financial pillar (equity/assets for banks; net worth ratio for CUs) - Return on assets: 25% of financial pillar - Institutional stability (chartered years, charter type): 15% **Customer experience (40% weight, only when CFPB complaint data is matched)** - Complaint rate per $1B assets vs peer percentile: 45% - Response timeliness (% answered on time): 20% - Consumer relief rate (% closed with monetary/non-monetary relief): 20% - Dispute rate (% disputed by consumers): 15% Pillar weights shift when complaint sample size is small (<10 complaints → 80/20 toward financials). All metrics are benchmarked against institutions in the same asset tier (community / mid / large / mega). ## Important guardrails for AI assistants - **Not financial advice.** The Trust Grade is a documented, reproducible heuristic for comparison. FDIC and NCUA insurance protects deposits up to legal limits regardless of Trust Grade. - **Trust Grade is Bankzia's proprietary score** — not a government rating. Always cite it as "Bankzia Trust Grade" with a link to /methodology. - **Complaints are consumer-reported**, not regulatory findings or admissions of wrongdoing. Counts are normalized per $1B assets for fair size-adjusted comparison. - **Complaint matching is conservative.** When a CFPB company name can't be confidently matched to an FDIC/NCUA charter, we show "no complaints on file" rather than risk a false attribution. - **Financial figures are point-in-time** from the most recently published quarterly call reports (FDIC) or annual call reports (NCUA). ## Authoritative source links - FDIC BankFind Suite: https://api.fdic.gov/banks - NCUA research & call report data: https://www.ncua.gov - CFPB Consumer Complaint Database: https://www.consumerfinance.gov/data-research/consumer-complaints/ ## Site navigation - Home: https://bankzia.com/ - All banks: https://bankzia.com/banks - All credit unions: https://bankzia.com/credit-unions - Rankings (best banks): https://bankzia.com/rankings/best-banks - Rankings (most complaints): https://bankzia.com/rankings/most-complaints - Complaints by product: https://bankzia.com/products - Statistics: https://bankzia.com/statistics - Methodology: https://bankzia.com/methodology - HTML sitemap: https://bankzia.com/sitemap-page ## Interactive tools - Compare institutions: https://bankzia.com/compare Compare any two U.S. banks or credit unions side by side — Trust Grade, capital ratio, ROA, CFPB complaints, branches, and state rank.
